The power you wield

For quite a few weeks now, I've been thinking of what it means to elect people to form a Government. The more I thought, the more questions kept coming into my head. Questions which needed to be answered. The source of my answers were primarily Google searches, byut also from various other websites and some books.
I am not saying my research is 100 percent accurate, nor am saying I am satisfied, because it seemed to me that soon as I found one answer to satisfy me to a particular question, another question arose. And the more I found out, the more scared I became. I won't deny that the fright comes from the subtleties I realise that a Government is capable of, because I am quite sure no one in Trinidad and Tobago will stand for an open take over of the country.
But back to my questions and my answers.
I started thinking of what is going on in the country, and then naturally started to wonder WHY... and how.
As I pointed out several times before, PM, President, MPs etc are behaving as they do because they CAN. This is not a fanciful thought. We have seen ample proof in terms of spending money, bypassing lawful entities by creating other entities that do not answer to anyone, arrogance to reasonable requests etc.
They can get away with this behaviour because we, the people, allow them to. There is no accountability, and this is why we are heading down, not the path of 2020 World Status, but more down a path of a third world dictatorship (though I hate the world as it does not adequately describe the nuances of a polite takeover).
We, the people, have the power to stop this. How? Not by protests. Not by resistance. Not by violence. Not by lawsuits and court action.
We can stop it by simple thinking, and moving our finger an inch of space on a poll card.
We the people, have immense power in that decision. Behind that decision, and that subsequent action, lies perhaps the most important decision you can make in your life. Think I am joking?
Let's look at this: When you vote, you are selecting and electing one person who may or may not represent a party, but more importantly, you are selecting a person whom you think can 'serve' you in providing your voice in the Government, a voice that ought to be heard in making laws; spending your tax dollars; making decisions, treaties, trade agreements with other countries; providing services from roads to health care; education programs, and certain level of employment etc. A very heavy responsibility bears the MP, but we have never seen that, have we?
Once that person is elected, s/he has total control over your life. Total control. What about your rights you ask? Parliament, in which your elected MP votes, makes the decisions that affect your rights. It makes the laws. The laws control every aspect of your life, even if you live in a lawless state outside the rules of society, what if you are caught? Then these rules and laws come into play and you are incarcerated, your freedom shackled. So to give power to people to control your life, that of your spouse, children, parents, friends, relatives, neighbours... is a heavy responsibilty and the most important you may make.
To not vote is to give this power to others, people who are in effect deciding your fate.
Don't like the parties, and don't want to vote? You give them power over you. Think both major parties are inadequate, evil and arrogant? That may be, but if one party remains in power too long, as we are seeing at present, you give it more power, more arrogance and you make it more powerful, more in control.
Now we are seeing one party has so much power, so much control, it simply rewrites a constitution to make itself even more powerful, and may even become untouchable.
As I pointed out some paragraphs before, this is a gradual process, so that we hardly notice. We concentrate so much on our daily sufferings that we barely have time to look up and see what is going on, to plan, to foresee, and to act. Perhaps it is the master stroke of those in charge, to have fiefs in the field and to remain in power by controlling the suffering, as did the kings of old. Only now, there is more tact in doing it. No whippings and floggings but the idea is still there.
No matter the calls for people to make the change, to try something new, I have little hope that there will be any more to see reason. My hopes dwindle each day. And I have to ask, is this the world we want our children to be born and grow up in? Maybe its time you ask yourself that too.

Jumbie, those are very sobering thoughts indeed. Boy you carve dee time out to reflect on the situation. You t'ink dee average donkey dong on dat rock cyare as much as you?
Man T&T buzzin' - is food shop lef' right and centre, music fuh so, carnaval, skyscrapers, water taxi - feel good factor in dee middle of a world recession - and barely 6 months after dee donkeys were told to tighten dey belt, now dey are told loosen dey belt!
Dee prevailing culture dong on dee Rock is fuh everybody tuh free up. Dee few people who really cyare bout dey chirren, ban'in dey belly tuh move dem out to Kyanada (aka Canada), USA, UK, Australia etc. Dee res' jumpin arong, takin' drugs, screwing anyt'ing wid a hole in it, spreadin' STDs etc. And is dem types in dee majority, dat will vote or not vote een dee nex' govament. Dey in dee majority. In odda words pardners - stupidity and a stupid mob, rules.
Well yes dat might song pessimistic - but know one t'ing, it is also realistic and a cold hard view o' reality. Some kyan take it and some kyan't.
"So to give power to people to control your life, that of your spouse, children, parents, friends, relatives, neighbours... is a heavy responsibilty and the most important you may make."
Yuh know what you say dey is so basic, but to to be honest, the truth of your statement - which I knew before now - did not even play on my mind when I was a youngster in my mid-twenties. I jes went and vote 'jes so'. And I was factually one of the more educated people people on dee Rock arong 1980. So - what you leave for dee less educated?
All there is now is blind hope - i.e. not hope based on anything substantial. In other words wishful thinking - that deese dohtish people on dat Rock will forget about me pouring scorn on dem and unite on dee real issues dat will affect dem and dey chirren 20, 30 years in dee future.
What each individual does today - not jes about who dey vote een - lays a foundation for the chirren of tomorrow. Why not make it a solid foundation?
...thanks Jumbie for the time and thought put into highlighting the perilous journey ahead facing the people of our country today...well said...but will it really matter to them now you have said it...?
...and the same also to the Captain, for trying to put it into perspective...so that they may truly understand the impact to our children of the future in the long term...!...will it also really matter to them...to the the people now that the light is shone on them...so that they may see the way...?
...as we look back and recall the events of November 2007, just prior to the last election, our voices on this site were collectively singing the same song, the same tune, and almost pleading for some sense of sanity and common sense from the electorates to "think before" staining their fingers...before voting....!
...for they were as Jumbie so eloquently put it, they were handing over so much power to these same folks to not only control our lives today, but the lives of our future generations as well, along with all our depleting but limited resources within our small country...and what was the end result...???...they went ahead and did it AGAIN...they all went and put themselves back into another round of slavery for a puppet master...???
..and did those that were put back into power really care...?...did it really matter to them...?..the only thing that matter was the fact that it placed them back into positions of power and unending corruption...and the plight of the people continued unabated...in fact..it has even worsened...and all we are getting is lame excuses one after the other that it has become laughable, not only to the people themselves, the few that can really understand whats happening...but also to the world at large...the international community is also laughing at us...really hard...!
...laughing at us as to how could we as a people accept what is happening and the attending treatment of pure arrogance by a Government regime...and sit back so calmly and quietly and allow it to happen...and they not realizing that we are not now dealing with a "true democracy" anymore...but instead, in all likelihood, a quasi-dictatorship of a regime...and one which will soon grow into a full blown "dictatorship"...if left unchecked...!
...but who is going to stop it and how...???
...so all of this is like a bad recurring nightmare that just won't go away...no matter how hard we try...as the people who holds the real power just like Jumbie says...keep repeatedly handing over that power over and over again...to those who are eagerly awaiting being given those same powers to use and abuse the people's power and render those same people into a state of helplessness and subservience...!!!
...and that's where we are today...another round of slavery in a different shape and form...and the puppet master cracks his whip and we all shiver and jump into action...? ...Massa day ain't done yet...is it...???...no sah, we like it dat way ...!!!
...but thanks anyway my friends for the time and energy to bring it to the front burner...again...like Jumbie said...more questions than answers...so the next question is ...how to initiate that change...which will make a difference...a change that really matters both now and well into the future...for our children's sake...for our future generations sake..???
...but the question of change...and that of change actually happening...is who...???...and more importantly...how...???...more questions again...but no answers...!!!
...this is very sad indeed...a very sad day for our people...and for our children both now and in the future...!!!
...goodluck...Trini.t.o.o
I totally agree with you, we can change the status quo of those we elect with our finger, daily we hear the complaints of citizens and then the same people re-elect the very administration that has ignored their cries. If only we could, like you, educate ourselves on governance, we would in effect make informed choices on Election Day. Our present system encourages our leaders to do as they wish, and we have no real means of redress other than on Election Day.
