See the Guardian 2008-02-01 where there have been 40 homicides in 31 days! That is roughly (based on a linear estimation) 480 homicides by end of the year.
Now look back at the graph above. You will see that at least one trendline seems to have matched what we are seeing now - and by year's end if all remains the same there are likely to be between 450 - 480 homicides.
Ahm...a wonda eef Trevor Paul and cronies have caught site of all this. Keep in mind that whether or not the crime rate is due to gangs or drugs - one fact remains that the homicide rate has been accelerating. I suspect that violent crime on the whole is also escalating.
An' yuh know eet still have people dong in T&T bawling "Boy i's dee sweetest place on dee earth to live". Ah guess dung beetles may think (if they could) the same of a gobar heap. No?
A long time ago (1961), Joseph Heller wrote a book about an impossible situation, one where the problem had two solutions - but neither was possible without the other.
He called it a Catch-22.
Trinidad is in a Catch-22 situation.
On the one hand, the problems such as poor health service, messy education system, corruption, crime, etc are not the concern of the general population. I wonder if the reason could be that the population is bombarded by so much negativity that people are understandably hard pressed to survive, and therefore seek only to improve the lives of themselves and their immediate families?
On the other hand, the Catch-22 comes about in that if they don't look at the larger picture and pay attention to where their choices can affect change, then things will just continue to spiral downwards, making it harder to survive.
We can blame the politicians, the duncey police, tanty and nennen all we want, but some of the responsibility lies with each and every one of us.
Unfortunately, most of us don't see it, and are stuck in this Catch-22.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning says that National Security Minister Martin Joseph never admitted the Government failed in its war on crime when he said on Thursday that specific measures to deal with gang related homicides "did not work."
"The solution to crime is not overnight solution, it takes a lot of effort, that we're going to try, if we try strategy A and it doesn't work then we will just try strategy B, if that doesn't work we try strategy C and we will continue to try until we get it right," Manning said yesterday."
"In an apparent response to widespread criticism of his statement that some of Government's crime-fighting initiatives had failed, National Security Minister Martin Joseph said last night in a statement that the Government was not failing in its efforts to fight crime."
While Patrick Manning and Martin Joseph try to make up their minds exactly what they are talking about, including Colm Imbert, citizens of this country are dying every day by the handful while they keep on playing childish games and "word gymnastics" with the English Language, I thought I'd make it so much easier for them by putting the meaning of these words they seem to be having trouble with for their ease of understanding above ...!
If Manning and Joseph have now decided that they have "not failed" then it means that they have "succeeded", simple as that, ok? The English language is very clear on that...!
If their success plan is to accelerate the killing off of citizens from about 100 in the year 2001 to just about 400 in the six year period of their "Master Plan" leading up to 2008, then they have succeeded!
So its either they failed or succeeded, and if they continue to insist that they have not failed, then the people should be afraid, very afraid of Manning and Joseph, as their plan of success is then to ensure more and more people are killed on a progressive scale from year to year as indicated on the graph, and they now both lay claim that these are not in fact "failures", but these are their "successes"?
So they both play the ("dotish") childish games with words, all the while our citizens die daily (robbed, raped & murdered, and Patrick & Joseph seem immune to the people's cry for help and security,) and who keep on losing their loved ones with more frequency. If these are successes, then we only hope and pray that Manning and Joseph and their family also join in on the "success train" themselves so that they don't miss out on the free rides, of success that is...! But what success are they talking about? These guys are living on Mars, not Trinidad!
What a colossal shame for them both and for so called leadership...! Not much hope here...!

..."Our initiatives have failed...we will review...we will put a different plan in place...:is this operating by VAPS or what?
...these guys don't have a friggin' clue what they are doing or what else to do, Patrick, Paul, and Joseph...!
...in a civilised world, they would have all resigned in shame...!
...in a world steeped in "culture" they would have all do the "hari kari" thing, again out of shame...!
...but in ole Trini, they watch you in the face and say they go try another "Vaps" and see if it works this time?
...with all the vast amount of resources at their disposal, and which they have expended carelessly and without results, and now going to say they go spend more and see if it go work...?
...the whole bunch of them should resign in shame...from the President, Prime Minister, Minister of Security and Commissioner of Police....this too is called white collar crime against the people, highway robbery without a gun...!
...so they go sing the same ole tune and only change the words every once in a while to confuse the people so that the people can't sing along with them, because they might know the tune but not the words...confuse them like hell!
...in the end these guys could'nt fight their way out of a "wet paper bag" let alone "fight crime"...what a sick joke on the people of TnT, somebody should have to pay for this, but don't wait for Manning, he sound asleep in his mansion, all safe and sound...and well protected at taxpayer's expense, insulated from the killing fields right round the corner in the real world...!
...don't hold your breath..just be careful of "the three clowns at work"!?

Boy, ah beginnning to t'ink I is a see-ah man, yes. Quick! Quick! Read the TT Express 2008-01-04 - before the puppet media are commanded from on high to remove this story.
Martin Joseph has now declared that the government has failed to control gang-related crime. Oh..oh...oh dear me! Like dee whole blasted Nation didn' know dat, boy.
But notice the picking and choosing of words - i.e. 'gang-related crime'. Joseph reportedly said bulk of the homicides in 2007-"I don't have the statistics in front of me"-were gang-rated. What dee ass does dat mean?
Could it mean:
Really, the situation is beyond a joke - and extremely serious. About 2 - 3 years ago the government was labelling most homicides as 'drug-related'. An yuh know coonoomoonoo people really believed dat crap!
Now dey come back rong and dey bawling 'GANG-RELATED'. This compartmentalisation of the crime situation is an attempt to pacify the electorate. You know - basically it means 'Breds doh worry too much. We know 'bout it, buh is mainly a gang problem - and we go sort it out'. Right - and by extension my name is Kofi Anan.
Look, the government eh no what dee ass to do. All dis talk 'bout big crack dong on crime - watch and see. I predicted it. And I predict it is a big pile of gobar.
The graph of the murder rate forecasts a very grim future for T&T. Homicides, suicides, perinatal death rate, infant mortality rates etc are 'indicators' of the well being of societies. I deviate to recall that a few years ago the T&T government tried to muzzle and force doctors to 'massage' downward the infant mortality rate.
T&T political leaders (with a few exceptions) seem to have a propensity for self-deception, inertia and missing the big picture.
The murder rate graph seems to predict at best that the murder rate may fall in 2008 - perhaps due to some natural phenomenon we are not aware off. The worse scenario is that it actually follows the 3rd order poly trendline and continues to rise exponentially.
The obvious foreseeable situation is that there will be a big crack down on crime in 2008 associated with a fall in murder rate by year's end. The PNM government will take full credits and the hope of the people for the PNM will rise. That's how stupid people are. The real test of course is if we see at least a three year consecutive fall in murder rate (matched by similar falls in other violent crime - especially rape).
The other obvious scenario is that despite crack downs on crime the murder rate continues to spiral madly out of control. Well den - I hope - crapeaud smoke a PNM pipe. Well crapeaud smoke everybody pipe - if you see what I mean.
However, the rise in homicide rate between 1999 and 2007 is phenomenal and it seems to be following an exponential curve. So, minor falls in homicide rate should not cause people to jump for joy. There would really need to be consistent and rather massive falls in homicide rate (along with other violent crime rates) for there to be any degree of confidence that the social ills of the nation are being reversed.
Based on similar crime scenarios in Jamaica, I'm not optimistic for T&T.
What a picture - (...more than a thousand words I would dare say...!) very vivid and revealing indeed, PNM may be doing something right? Or then they must be doing "nothing" at all, as one of their "supporters" wrote earlier, "if you can't do better, then let worse continue"....and they doing a damn good job of it too? What significant increases from year to year, can you imagine if they were running a business and were getting these types of results?
But then they could not even run a "sweetie parlour" because they got their own "arse" on backwards, since they are getting all the "negatives to increase" (crime, murders, robberies, kidnappings etc) and all the "positives to decrease"(public services, health care, roads & transportation, education, water, lights, telephone etc..)?
What a business concept of the PNM?- In "true trini - "they brain cross thread"! The whole bunch of PNM dummies!
This could only mean you steppin' up with Patrick, this is his lame brained idea and meaning of "progress"...!
...On to First World Status? 2020 Vision? On Patrick's progress...?
But then as I wrote earlier, you just don't take "grave diggers" (or was that rock diggers -"geologists?)and make them "bankers", because these are the types of results you will get, even if you put them all into "striped suits".! (monkey pants?)
This now begs the burning question, could we survive the next five years of this "progress"?
In taking a look at this "picture" and the reading of Anand's last column hoping for a quick rescue and turn around in T&T for 2008, if the same PNM dummies are at the controls,(Patrick, Joseph, Paul, et al) then the "results" are very predictable! "Status Quo"! And thats being optimistic...!
In fact any change that would come by, would be in the above form of Patrick's meaning of "progress"!
Anyone believes in "miracles"? ( I am still an optimist or a real sucker for punishment)! After all there are lots of stuff falling from space these days, meteors and all, never can tell what may fall in the right place or the right heads, whichever, there are lots of miracles left over from the last time, and as they say, he works in mysterious ways! The good Lord that is!...
