Prejudice: Greatest threat to T & T democracy today

The greatest threat to democracy of Trinidad and Tobago today is prejudice. Prejudice is defined as an unfavourable opinion or feeling of others; formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. Going into this election the base (as defined as the bottom core supporters) of PNM and UNC in auto response have lined up behind their respective parties. Hence the reckless conduct of the respective Political Leaders who hold themselves as being immune from being held accountable by the electorate. An electorate that historically been divided along racial lines, not on political philosophy or plans for the improvement of the living conditions of the inhabitants of the twin island republic. This political infrastructure has been exploited by the Political Leaders of both bases in a cynical manipulation of electoral arithmetic regardless of the consequences on the well being of the state/country for all the citizenry. This type of conduct is base i.e. morally low; dishonourable; mean-spirited; selfish and cowardly. The threat from one hand is constitutional dictatorship and party supremacy, on the other hand is a party scorned, out to settle scores with the PNM. Squashed in the middle is the nation state and its collective citizenry. Who will seek the supremacy of the nation over the supremacy of the party or the political leader?

Boy "trinican", you're so right, the "writing is on the wall" but how do you get our people (trinis) to read it?

You have said it so well, but how do you get their attention?

They have been "blinded" by party loyalty, and everything else does not matter to them, while the "party leaders" are simply exploiting the situation to the extreme, if not fostering and promoting it along racial lines, at every opportunity they get.

Recall the "opening salvo" by Manning, "we don't want this election to be about "race" or along "racial lines".

Well to me, he just introduced "race" into the scene, because if even the people were not thinking about it at first, he has just made them aware that this is what "his" election is all about.

Similarly, Panday started his tirade by getting back at the "enemy" who put him out of power the last time, and here begins his "war" between the two "forces", Afro and Indo Trinis.

Yet, precious little being said by either of the "leaders" about the issues affecting the people and country, what they plan to do about them or how they are going to deal with them, except "we have to defeat the enemy".

In fact, Manning and Panday both have their "supporters" so pre-occupied with their "brainwashing" on a daily basis, that they have no time to pause and reflect as to the outcome "after the election" and what will happen to them thereafter, except to carry out the "command" of their leaders like "zombies" in automode.

This to me is very frightening. Just what their leaders want, and getting them to do willingly and without thinking.

So yes, their leaders actions and behaviour are dishonourable and selfish, but then this is not "new" to them, they have done it before and have built their reputations along these lines.

Remember, it was Paday who said "Politics has a Morality of its Own", and was he ever so right.!

The both leaders are simply pushing the "mob mentality" ideology along racial lines to their supporters and they are reacting and following blindly along, oblivious of the end consequences to themselves.

In the end, the "leaders" becomes winners and the citizens becomes "losers" regardless of the outcome of the elections!

Imagine, a repeat of history itself, but in just such a short space of time? Leaves us to wonder, what will it take to "open their eyes" to the reality and the ensuing consequences".?

The writing is there, but they are not reading period!.

...they are too busy and mesmerized by the selfish and power hungry leaders to see!.

... right now they can only hear, their "leaders that is", and their every command too.! Very sad!
