Richard Charan, reported in the Express, Tuesday, May 1st 2007 that:

A 23 year old business woman who left her home at 2.30 pm to put out the garbage was kidnapped by four men and gang-raped in a cane field. South Western Division Police patrolling the M-2 Ring Road found her at the side of the road around 9.30 p.m on Sunday night with her hands and feet tied - some seven hours after her ordeal began. Her condition is was described as critical at the San Fernando General Hospital - doctors trying to stop the bleeding from her genitals.

The above article serves as a sobering reflection of the callousness and brutality with which decent law-abiding citizens can be suddenly struck.

I feel for this young woman. I cannot even imagine the extent of suffering she went through physically, but the mental anguish will be much worse, and any signs of normality after this can only be a testament to her inner strength and willpower.

Today, I can only ask that you put yourself into her shoes, and try to feel for yourself the hell she must be experiencing right now.

Then, post your prayers here. I will print them and send them to her. If you wish to send cards, then please email me for an address to post them to. (I do not know this woman personally, I just believe that support from us all may help in some way).

I can only express my sorrow for what happened to her, and several other women whose stories remain untold.

Prayers? No I will say no prayers. Hundreds of thousands having been praying and making offerings to the Gods etc over the last few years. I am unable to see the effect of prayers on crime. A religious fanatic recently told me with authority that but for prayers the crime situation in T&T would be far worse. These people have a direct line to God. I am obviously not worthy and have no such direct line.

Furthermore, I am of the opinion that God must be a blind and stupid idiot to watch on at the sickening crimes against innocent people in T&T whilst waiting to be prayed to much harder, before doing something.

Enter Patrick Manning, who one must infer for the moment is guided by that same God, to remove any perceived obstacles to hanging criminals. The  TT Express 2007-05-06 reported of Mr Manning that:

'...as bad as the criminals were they were afraid of their life being taken away.

"An essential element of that package has to be the return of capital punishment. I am a strong supporter of capital punishment," he stressed.'

So, let me see...it is either Mr Manning is guided by the same God that most Trinbagonians are praying to or not. It is a straight case either one or the other.

And what about the Christian community in Trinidad & Tobago and all you lovely devout church-goers out there. How many of you support Mr Manning and the pro-death penalty movement? How many of you believe that it is God's will to have murderers hanged in T&T as a crime reduction/prevention strategy?

Be it Christian, Muslim, Hindu or other God, I refuse to say a prayer to any God that would uphold Mr Manning's position on hanging criminals. Next we could expect Mr Manning to be divinely guided to promote chopping off rapists' penises and testicles! Two fingers to that God!!
